Mahendragarh Teen Invents Fraud-Proof UPI Alternative
In a remarkable display of homegrown innovation, Ankit Thakur, a BTech student from Mahendragarh, Haryana, has created an alternative UPI system aimed at stamping out cyber frauds that plague India’s digital payment landscape. Motivated by his father’s personal loss to scammers, this young tech whiz is offering his foolproof solution to the government for free, prioritizing public safety over personal gain.

From Personal Loss to Tech Hero
Ankit’s journey began in 2020 when his father, Sunil Thakur, a driver from Talwana Kheri village, fell victim to an online scam, losing Rs 20,000. This incident hit hard, pushing Ankit—a Computer Science and Engineering student—to dive deep into UPI vulnerabilities. Instead of just complaining, he uncovered three critical bugs exploited by fraudsters: Chrome Intent Vulnerability, Authentication Bypass, and the sneaky Audio Hijack.
These flaws are no small matter. Chrome Intent lets malicious websites silently launch UPI apps without your click, opening doors for thieves. Authentication Bypass skips app locks or biometrics, while Audio Hijack tricks users with fake sounds—like a background app mimicking “Enter PIN to receive money.” Ankit reported them to Google’s security team, which fixed one, but he knew more was needed.
A Foolproof Alternative UPI Unveiled
Now, Ankit has gone further by designing a complete alternative UPI system that’s “foolproof” against such exploits. He claims it eliminates fraud risks entirely and even prevents accidental transaction losses. “I have designed an alternative UPI system that leaves no scope for cyber frauds. It will also prevent loss of money due to online transactions made by mistake,” Ankit told The Tribune.
What’s more, he’s built a companion mobile UPI app and is ready to hand it all over to the Government of India at no cost. “I could patent the system in my name, but I want the Government of India to adopt it so that crores of UPI users across the country can benefit,” he added passionately. This selfless move underscores a growing trend of young Indians tackling national issues with tech smarts.
Why UPI Frauds Demand Urgent Fixes ?
UPI has transformed payments in India, but frauds are skyrocketing. Scammers use fake QR codes, phishing links, and social engineering to drain accounts, with cases like audio tricks fooling even savvy users. Recent reports highlight vulnerabilities in quick transactions that can’t be reversed easily, urging smarter defenses like real-time AI detection.
Ankit’s innovation aligns with expert calls for “security-by-design,” including better audio locks, device checks, and user alerts. In Mahendragarh itself, police recently busted a fake payment app gang, showing local fraud networks are real threats. His system could set a new standard, blending behavioral analysis with ironclad protocols.
Government’s Role and Broader Impact
Ankit is calling on authorities for support to scale his solution and combat banking cybercrimes. If adopted, it could safeguard millions, especially in rural areas like Mahendragarh where digital literacy lags. This story echoes other student-led fixes, like ML-based QR scam detectors, proving India’s youth are the frontline against digital threats.
For everyday users, simple habits help too: double-check audio prompts, avoid suspicious links, and use official apps. But innovations like Ankit’s promise systemic change.
Hope for Safer Digital India
Ankit Thakur’s story is inspiring—a village student’s revenge on fraud through code. As UPI hits record volumes, his free offering could redefine secure payments. Will the government step up? Time will tell, but one thing’s clear: talent like this is India’s real digital shield.
